I think my title pretty much sums this book up well. This wasn't a bad book per say. I enjoyed the message that it employed of forgiveness and trusting God. It was just too long. At lot of it was repetitious with characters doing a lot of going off and thinking or talking to themselves. This could have been cut out IMO without damaging the story line.

It was also a bit of a cliched plot with many things that didn't make a whole heck of a lot of sense. Why would someone (especially a woman) hire a drifter off the street to live right next to her and come into her home to work as her new handyman without asking for any identification, references or doing a simple background check? I guess it makes for a better story that way.

How could Mona and Liza have met Joe on two separate occasions before he came to work for them yet they never recognized him? They ogle the photos on the back of the books like crazy as well. Mona especially should have had his image burned into her brain. Yet she never thought he looked familiar. That was too hard to believe and pretty much ruined the book for me. I also got sick of her going off on Joe over every little thing. I thought there for a while I was going to have to start counting how many times she blew up at him and fired him.

I hate it when the protagonist acts like an idiot. "Moaning Mona" made this book hard to get through. My advice if you DO read it; SKIM, SKIM SKIM!!!

Happily Ever After Deep Haven Series #1 Susan May Warren 9781414313832 Books Reviews

I read this book a few years ago for our church book club. Since it was offered as a kindle freebie a little while back, I thought I'd go back and re-read it.

When we discussed this in book club, one of our hang ups was that the beginning part really didn't seem to make sense in the storyline. Were they really that unobservant not to know each other? (I'm not giving anything away, since this all happens in the first few chapters.)

We decided that it was a good light read for the beach. It was also nice that it was set in the same state we live in, so we recognized quite a few places. The writing is pretty true to that, even to the devil's kettle.

On my second read, I realized that either one of two things had happened. A. I had matured in my reading tastes or B. This was a typical style of Christian fiction for the 90's-00's. The style of adding faith into fiction at the time was to write it into the dialogue, and Warren does this with flair. The characters and plot are pretty typical and predictable. The main character has a dream she wants to make come true, but she comes off as a little neurotic and frustratingly slow to see what's obvious. There are a few places that you have to suspend belief.

On the other hand, it is a nice lighthearted story and I like many of Warren's other books. If you can overlook the flaws, I think you'll enjoy reading this one. The book can't help that it was a product of its time.
The main thing that touched me deeply in this novel, is that no matter what goals and dreams any of us have, if we give them to God, He will give us all we need. Oftentimes, we forget how much He loves us, and give in to fear or anxiety.

The hero in this novel did just that. A handyman named Joe, he shows up at an old house in Deep Haven, to do repairs for a lovely young woman named Mona. Mona has her dream of turning this house into a bookstore and coffee shop. Her best friend, Liza, is all in, too, plus she has other gifts to contribute!

Along the way, there's love at stake, mysterious disasters to overcome, and serious heartache as wel, as Mona, Liza and Joe deal with circumstances. But there's one who has the answers! You'll see, as I did, by reading this delightful novel! Kudos to Susan Mae Warren! 😂
Loved this book. I rate books on how much i want to keep reading and this gets 5 stars from me.

In speaking to the other reviewers who spoke critically. ... 1).. yes perhaps she should have known him from the book jacket or as someone said, the internet, but i think this book was written in 1996 (not sure.. bottom copyright in my kindle version says 1996).... pre internet for most folks. Pictures were not everywhere in the 90's.... 2) The vicissitudes of Mona... yes she was up and down but I think many of us are like that. The book just puts that on steroids. 3) Yes it is a Christian book. Those are the underlined passages for me and I love how it was woven through the book. 4) I don't quite get why Joe kept Gabe a secret. Most people aren't that shallow (or maybe they are and I live in a bubble.)

All that said, I still just kept reading and loving every minute of it!! I loved rooting for them to get together even though i knew they would in the end. It was a sappy love story. I just wish there was a part two to their relationship!!! I have questions!!
