I've heard of problems in a marriage, but this certainly takes the cake. Poor Frances, having a husband like Martin. It's a dilemma to say the least. I like the basic story line despite all the explicit details.Product details

Interesting story about a woman Frances who got married to Martin with no prior dating experience. Their life is all rosy until she discovers to her dismay that he is addicted to porn and other vices. While this story has some really unexpected twists, I found myself absolutely appalled, annoyed and frustrated by Frances' naivety and willingness to accept Martin's lies and explanations, even with glaring evidence.
She came across as quite a pushover and it frustrated me to no end. How else can we explain a woman coming home to find a strange pair of underwear in her matrimonial bed, only for her to willingly, very willingly, accept her husband's explanations that the underwear were hers, no questions audibly asked. Surely, a grown woman would recognise a pair of underwear that isn't hers particularly as she didn't leave it there the night before, and firmly point it out to the man. So annoying. So very annoying indeed!
That said, I found the novel to be captivating and a page turner. Perhaps it was because, I wanted to know how Frances ended up and if she was able to break away from her lying jerk of a husband.
When Fiction blurs the lines between facts and real life situations, you can only wonder if the word in its very esence "Fiction" should have ever been invented at all. This is not fiction, it is a factual novel with the groundbreaking elements of real life struggles and emotionally tearing experiences that has devasted the happy marriages of millions of couples around the world, and with the rise and domination of porn in todays society- that is free with one click, many souls have become possessed with the demons embued into the art. The dialogue is amazing and real, this book is utterly absorbing and an exquisite treat for the senses. Fiction? NO- how can it be when millions are tormented by its main theme? One thing is certain though, this absolutely dynamic story is a must read.
What I liked about this book is its honesty and non-sentimental approach to a somewhat sensitive subject matter. The title does not do the content justice as it suggests something more titillating. What we do get as a reader is an in depth look at what can go wrong in a marriage and the consequences of dealing with addiction and the realization that marriage isn’t always a match made in heaven.
The narrative didn’t really get started until the second half of the book for me, I found the first part to a bit too much scene setting and character introduction, but when the actual story did kick in, I was hooked. Although I didn’t really connect with Frances, and thought that some of the dialogue was a little stilted, I went along with her journey from a naïve newly wed to shocked and wiser wife, when she decided to track down and discover the reason behind her husband’s reliance on pornography and alcohol. It is her inner journey and realization that there is more to life than being with a man who didn’t really respect her that kept me reading on. Although, I found the ending somewhat sugary.
The narrative is at once touching and unsentimental in style, giving the characters a believability that I certainly bought into. It is a book that is well worth the read for it is a really solid and interesting story. Highly recommended for those who are sick and tired of unrealistic portrayals of marriage and sex.
I understand this is the first of Stevie Turner’s novels – she has written others such as ‘No Sex, Please, I’m Menopausal!’ and ‘A House Without Windows’ and ‘The Pilates Class’.
This is the first time I have read anything by this author. As other reviewers have pointed out, the book is not a voyeuristic tale about pornography. Instead, it takes us on a journey through one woman’s experience of living with a husband who is addicted to sex and porn, over a time span of twenty-five years of betrayal, hurt and forgiveness repeated many times like a movie loop, yet the author makes it intriguing as the story gradually unfolds.
The word ‘naive’ has been used to describe the main character, Frances Andrews, who forgives her husband repeatedly from a time somewhere perhaps in the early eighties to twenty-five years later. For me, this book is not about someone being naive but in a state of denial, which is an altogether more insidious and difficult mental state to deal with.
In the early eighties in the UK it was difficult to quit a marriage that showed signs of ‘something wrong’, but much more than that it is difficult to reconcile the caring person one sees every day with the deceit that goes on elsewhere in the marriage, in a life that seems otherwise normal. Many people do not want to believe that the person they love can be capable of such treachery and the act of forgiveness becomes part of the denial process as excuses are made in an attempt to retain that part of the marriage that is wholesome.
The subject is dealt with well in my opinion and the story takes an unusual turn that keeps the reader’s interest. I will be looking out for more novels by Stevie Turner.
