I wonder what it says about me that I didn't find anything about The King's Pleasure to be shocking? It all starts when Abigail tries to steal a loaf of bread for her starving family. The king has mercy on her, but instead of letting her return home, he keeps her as his pleasure slave. As a child, Abi was fascinated by the women surrounding the previous king, so it's almost like a dream come true. However, things at the palace are not what she thought they would be and soon her merciful king seems to demand too much of her.The King's Pleasure is an extremely short and quick read, but it did feel like a full story. We get to know Abigail and Niall quite well, and there's a surprising amount of world building. In fact, there's a lot of talk about the world and the culture, and really not enough sex. I would have much preferred more sex and less world building, because honestly, I didn't enjoy a lot of it. The term "gypsy" is used a lot, almost like that really was what Abigail's race was. But her people are described exactly the way you'd expect them to be based on what they're called, which made me a bit uncomfortable. This isn't our world, so why does this slur exist and in basically the exact way that someone in our world would use it?
As for the sex, there are several scenes, but nothing too graphic or detailed. The culture of this world is very open in regards to sex, so there's orgies at the palace. Women are passed around and shared. Abigail is put on display a few times for others to admire, and the king does let those closest to him use her as well. But like I said, it's not overly detailed and the sex scenes aren't drawn out. They don't even get as kinky as I'd expect from what we know about palace life. There is one scene involving a dog, which felt thrown in just to be shocking, but it really wasn't since it felt so out of place given the tone of the rest of the sexual scenes. It was more awkward and gross than anything else.
In the end, The King's Pleasure was okay. I was expecting a lot more sex, and a lot more varied and kinky sex. Probably some BDSM and dubious consent, but I was let down in that regard. The relationship between Abi and Niall is really at the forefront and was quite well developed given these few pages, but I guess I was expecting something totally different.

The King Pleasure eBook Kitty Thomas Reviews
I love the work of Kitty Thomas. She is a unique writer with the ability to craft these amazing, rich worlds where all sorts of diabolic things can happen without it feeling weird or uncomfortable. The King's Pleasure is no exception. I love the first half of this novella. The relationship between Abby and the King is tough, yet still tender. My only problem was towards the end (potential spoiler) when the King suddenly turns on Abby and treats her horribly for no good reason. At that point it became difficult to understand and enjoy this exceptionally crafted world.
Thomas' work is generally dark. Most of the stories are rape fantasies (all of the stories?) and if that offends you, you should not read it. If you are interested in reading dark erotica, I would recommend the novels. Comfort Food is the most disturbing, and good literature is often disturbing. Tender Mercies is the best love story, and likely to be a favorite. The novellas are not as good, and I don't think I have liked them less because they are short. I am sad to report that this my least favorite.
***spoiler-ish***
The erotic scenes are fine. The first half of the story is good. The problem is in the middle the king has a radical personality change as a result of one comment. Abby's behavior as a result of his initial actions make a bit more sense, however, her eventual personality development is bizarre. I'm willing to do quite a bit of suspension of disbelief. A world that seems medieval, except for the electricity and modern plumbing? Sure. A woman who tried to steal from the palace kitchens is punished down the hall from where the king is sleeping? Well, okay. It's a strange place, but I will go with it.
A strong, compassionate, thoughtful character suddenly becoming paranoid and brutal? That needs more motivation, a LOT more motivation, than Thomas provides.
Extremely short for $2.99! No story development or character, really.
I kept seeing the name `Kitty Thomas' around one day, so I picked up this novella out of curiousity. If you like a darker style of erotic fiction with boundaries that can be pushed a little then like me you will enjoy this story.
Abigail, a gypsy theif gets caught stealing food from the local castle. Rather than slicing her hands off as punishment the King takes her as a slave, the first of his harem. Abby, knowing nothing of the wild ways of his court, is thrown in to it all. It's simply the way things are done in the kingdom, and one she learns to enjoy very much. Highly erotic orgies and other public displays of sex are featured, as well as exploration of the master/slave relationship. The emotional bonds that form between the major characters is skillfully done, I had no trouble relating to them.
The way Kitty writes is just fantastic in every way. She doesn't cram her writing with unneccesary information and is very good at getting across to the reader the psychology behind the scenes.
There is only one downside for me and that is that the story isn't long enough. Not that it's too short to be worth the price tag, it definately is worth paying for. I'm so taken with this story I yearn for more even now. I do hope she goes back to this world, these characters - hot!
The night after I had read The King's Pleasure, I picked up another of her books called Guilty Pleasures which was just so intense and sizzling hot!
I can honestly say I'm hooked on Kitty!
It was a nice escapism read. The end was a bit melodramatic, bordering on high Drama mama angst, however it all turns around.
It was good until the part ... ok, no spoilers. But last 10% of the book feels rushed and is a real missed opportunity not elaborating more about their every day life as King and slave after everything solves out, just ending with a non-descriptive "and they lived happily ever after" is not a good way to finish an erotica story.
