I found this book to be a very enjoyable read. Ms. Depolo has a smooth writing style and is quite adept at creating a vivid picture. I especially enjoyed the backdrop to the story which takes place in England. The story almost reminded me of a diary in how the reader is immersed in Maggie's experience and thoughts as she deals with a difficult family situation. I also found it interesting how there is no big drama here but rather a realistic portrayal of how relationships get under our skin and can make us feel good or bad about ourselves.
I think this is a great summer book or vacation book. Anyone can relate to this story as it captures the dilemmas we face as we all age and have to deal with some of the unpleasant realities the passage of time presents while also pointing out the advantages. Looking forward to the next installment...
I like this book a lot, and there's no place between 4 & 5. You want to cheer Maggie on because the author creates a sympathy for her. But I was very glad I wasn't Maggie growing up under the shadow of such a poisonous mother. I love the idea of going back home to try to make things right.
I loved the painstaking observation of detail, something I miss in stories that rush along. The pacing was just right. I wanted to know what happened next but I also wanted to luxuriate in the setting and relish the characterization.
I wondered how on earth the author was going to end this, but it was done just right in a satisfying way. It couldn't have ended otherwise I realized on considering it.
And I'm a sucker for a love story. Thwarted love is the theme of this book and who hasn't had a thwarted love? From a bleak beginning, in the end the sun shines over the wet English countryside.
A fine debut. What's next?
Maggie's experiences repeatedly reinforce the power in a human willingness to be honest with our selves, to take another look, at self and others, and to open up to the gifts that others' lives may have the potential to bring to ours, if we're willing to see and receive them for what they are. This reflective story reminded me that humility, together with fearless self-honesty, though often tough choices to find the willingness to make, as they so often are for Maggie, almost always open a door to greater things.
Another facet of the story I appreciate is that, when Maggie doesn't simply accept what she's told - or, perhaps more importantly, what she has told herself - a portal to truth opens that brings vital discoveries and revelations, treasure that would remain unearthed without this willingness on her part. This novel has twists and turns that appeal, and create a wholeness in its story, but what I found most meaningful is its theme of the power inherent in our journey to our self, and the invaluable contribution others can make to that, if we let them.
As soon as I started reading Maggie’s Shadow I was in territory I instantly recognised. Maggie’s relationship with her horrendous mother, and the journey she embarks on to free herself from its long shadow made her immediately a heroine who attracted my sympathy. Anyone who has had someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder in their family will identify with Maggie and her uphill struggle to maintain a compassionate relationship with the woman who so selfishly demands everything while giving nothing in return. This novel is not a straightforward romance, but instead a far richer love story on so many levels. It is about an inner journey as much as an outer one, and the characters are real and touching in their authenticity. I felt so much for Maggie with her self-questioning and fearless honesty, as well as her determination to find a way to do the right thing both as a daughter and as an individual with needs of her own. The story was unpredictable enough in its twists and sometimes quite unexpected turns to keep my attention from start to finish. I so wanted Maggie to have the kind of happy ending she had earned. You must read it for yourself to find out whether she did! Maggie’s Shadow is beautifully, faultlessly written with an individual voice that I look forward to finding again in Morrine Depolo’s next novel. I was surprised that this was a debut novel, as the writing is so accomplished and confident. This is a talented new writer worthy of 5 stars, and I am delighted to have discovered her.
Enjoyable read....couldn't put it down. Author was very very good at putting you in the moment. Feeling just what Maggie felt. I definitely recommend this book!
Loved each character -- so sharply drawn they stay in my mind. I was totally absorbed in mother/daughter dynamics and how the author captures and explores those ebbs and flows and repeating cycles. The plot unfolds with perfect turns. This book rings true at the deepest level and resonates across generations that seek their own identity beyond nature and nurture. I look forward to following Morrine Depolo.
I had the privilege of workshopping Morrine's manuscript ideas in a class we took together. I could never have imagined even then that her piercing characters would jump onto the page as they have! From the very first, when Maggie goes home and re-meets her shall-we-say confrontational Mum, this story had me be the throat. No spoilers - you have to dive in to discover just how multi-dimensional the characters are, and how multi-layered is her character-driven plot. Go, Mo!
