I read this with my 7 year old daughter. It has some challenging subjects that needed to be discussed as we read through the book, and the specialized vocabulary when explaining the mill was a bit tough. I had to use google a few times to really get a grasp of what the author was explaining. All in All though, a good book. I would recommend it. My daughter struggled a bit, as I said, but ended up liking it when we were through. Child labor was the main topic, and the effects on the family and why the families may have madd the choices they did during that time.Tags : Counting on Grace [Elizabeth Winthrop] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. 1910. Very engaging, realistic portrayal. Came across the mention of this book when reading through stories on www. morningsonmaplestreet.com. This book is excellent and the website is really fascinating. I think I’m hooked )
I have to admit when I started this book I wasn't sure if I could finish it. Grace is a poor child of the early 1900's and speaks that way which is something thats kind of a turn off for me. But I'm glad I made my way through the beginning because as soon as the story unfolds, it becomes harder and harder to put down. I rooted for Grace and Arthur to make it out of the mill and to be able to make a real life for themselves as the smart children they were and the intelligent adults they could become if given the chance. The author paints a vivid portrayal of a time when children really were put to work in dangerous situations just to ensure the survivial of their families.
I think this is a book every middle school child should read. Not only to help them appreciate their education but also the life they are able to live thanks to the sacrafices of people like Lewis Hine who cared enough to help bring this issue of child labor to public attention. And also people like Grace, who was fictional but had many, many real life counterparts that shared her struggle. I hope this book becomes a classic.
A historical novel written for middle-agers, vital enough to please even adults. Grace is a precocious little girl of a time before child labor laws were established. The look at work conditions, no matter how familiar we may be with them, is shocking. This, along with well-drawn and sympathetic characters (we love Grace) plus a good story, make it a winner.
This was a gift for my granddaughter and she enjoyed it thoroughly. It fit in with some history she had been studying.
Really personalized about why child labor laws are in place. Sad that it took 38 years after this book was set to actually convince people it was a bad idea to have children work in factories.
It met all of my requirements. I was writing my Autobiography and it included the picture of 12 year old Addie Card and a reference to Lewis Hines who took the picture, and Elizabeth Winthrop, who has Addie Card on her book cover. I bought two books, one for my editor. The story about "Counting on Grace" includes the migration of French people from Canada coming into New England to work in the cotton mills. I was writing about the cotton mills in North Adams Mass. and my French family that came down to also work in the cotton mills. When I was a boy I used to go into the cotton mills and watch the workers, including young ones in the early 1940s. Elizabeth wrote her story while staying in North Adams and she does a excellent job of telling the story of young Grace and the hardships she and her family endured working in a cotton mill.
Geared to young folks so quick read however helped me understand how my Grandmother happened to be in USA from Canada. She was most likely just like Grace so was an aha moment for me and possibly why family did not teach my generation French .
