Very good read, though some may find it a bit dry
This book is a must read for Christians. It is extremely well written, completely scriptural based, eye opening, liberating, and altogether life changing for me. I will never hear another sermon the same, I'll never read another scripture or book the same, I will never serve or perform another Christian duty the same. All I can say more, is you must read this book. Yes, it is some heavy theology, but it will build a foundation in your Christianity that is essential to powerful Christian living. Just labour through, and take your time.
Chafer's excellent book walks the reader through God's Word drawing together references from both the Old and New Testaments which explain what I believe too be the single most important truth of life and eternity for every person to know and understand. The Eternal God, Everlasting Father, Creator, Deliverer, Redeemer, Truth, Righteous, King of Kings, Lord of Lords loves you/me and has provided a pathway to Him by which all who follow the path will be forgiven, saved unto eternal life and received before the very presence of God on His throne . This is "grace" because we could never earn or deserve such blessings, they are the gifts of God, freely given to those who have placed their faith in the resurrected Christ, Jesus of Nazareth. There is no more important fact or truth under the sun. Chafer helped me understand "grace."
Christian growth is based upon rest in the finished work of Christ. Man always wants to add to or necessitate further action beyond which the Cross has provided in Christ. Men like John MacArthur, Ray Comfort, James MacDonald, John Piper, Paul Washer, and a multitude of others just can't grasp the utter freedom and simplicity in Christ. Chafer clearly and concisely shows how the law, while righteous and judicious, never has a place in God's plan for the salvation of those whom He chose in Christ before the foundation of the world. He understands that repentence is defined not as an action we take nor is it a response to what God has done, but simply being translated from darkness into light, from disbelief into belief, from not knowing God to knowing God. He shows how the teachings of Jesus raise the burden of the law to a whole new level to the extent that if the the law doesn't break someone before a holy God, Jesus's life and teachings will. The gospel of the Kingdom is different than the gospel of grace. Rightly dividing the Word of truth is the key to understanding the Bible. Chafer has done a thorough and very detailed job of showing how God's word divides between grace and law, the Kingdom rule and the Christian life, and positional truth versus practical Christian living.
A guide for my Bible study group this year and one we are sharing with joy. I never understood the principle of grace much until now and am bowled over by it. For the first time I can understand the message of the film Dead Man Walking, most especially the execution scene in which the nun's eyes lock with those of the dying convict so that he can believe in God's forgiving grace. The scene was a great mystery to me before this wonderful book.
This book is great refresher at a time when Christians have completely lost focus on what God's Grace really means. Today, the vast majority of Christians have substituted their works for Grace--thinking about the great things they are doing for God instead of what God has already done for us in His Grace. Such Christian thinking is the future "wood, hay and stubble" to be burned off at the Judgment seat of Christ--not loss of salvation, rather a symbol of a wasted Christian life void of future rewards in heaven. What is "wood, hay and stubble"? You don't have to look any further than Isa. 646 "...our righteousnesses are like filthy rags". Christians are substituting their righteousnesses (their good works) as a substitute for God's Righteousnesses. KB Johnson, Ohio
The well-known founder of Dallas Theological Seminary's classic study in a most important theme. Dr. Chafer very clearly explains what grace is in contrast to 'law' and how to live the life of a Christian in contrast to one of legalism. This is the high water mark for those seeking to please God. My salvation is all of God's beloved Son, nothing of myself, nothing of merit but all of grace.
I highly recommend this classic work for any Christian seeking to know how to please God His way...all of grace!
